IF I WON I WOULD...

I would go to Amsterdam and finally see the Van Gogh museum. His work has been a constant inspiration to me, as he struggled with his mental health.

I would also go to the Artis Zoo, where there are 700 animal species, many close to extinction. I could photograph and paint them before they are gone forever.

I have only been on a plane once before, as my husband is a wheelchair user, and gets frustrated on aeroplanes. We tend to only go to UK destinations, but all the most amazing artwork and animal species are housed overseas.

MY STORY

I've been working in clerical positions since I left university with a Psychology degree, and moved in with my husband. He is a wheelchair user, and being his carer meant it was difficult to train further in Psychology, so I chose something 9 to 5.

Last year, I had a nervous breakdown. I couldn't cope with the feeling I wasn't making a difference in the world, and the previous five years seemed to be one piece of bad news after another - my mother died, we were turned down for adoption and I was growing to dislike my job.

Once I was signed off, I was put on prozac, and found it impossible to keep my hands still. I started painting again, something I loved at school but abandoned to follow Psychology. I painted obsessionally for months, as my mental health worsened.

Finally the right combination of medication and therapy has meant I have secured a place at college in September to study art and design. Once I have qualifications in the two fields I care most about, I hope to train as an art therapist, and help other people like myself to discover the healing qualities of art.

I am also currently writing a book about my last year, entitled 'Pesky, 33'. It includes pieces from my online journal, in which I've kept track of everything which has happened, good and bad, since being diagnosed with clinical depression. It will finish on my 34th birthday. It would be amazing to have something really amazing, such as this trip, to put into this book.
