IF I WON I WOULD...
... develop new ideas, experience the constantly challenging New York artscape and visit studios. Since being awarded an Internship at Museum of Modern Art, New York in 2006 it has been my ambition to return and put to good use the three months of orientation I had at one of the world's largest art institutions. Since then I have completed my Masters in Painting at The Royal College of Art and am looking to develop ideas for future exhibitions and artwork.
In particular I am keen to visit artists studios and potentially look into how I might be able to work in this environment for a prolonged period in the future.
MY STORY
I was born in Sutton, South London and had relatively little experience with art in my childhood. I also was diagnosed with a hearing impairment at an early age which did affect my confidence in the classroom. From my first school visit to an art gallery I knew what I wanted to do most was to draw and paint. I was fortunate to have supportive parents who fueled my growing interest, enrolling at a Saturday art club at the age of ten. With this technical knowledge I developed rapidly and enrolled on a foundation course at Wimbledon College in 2000, then a Fine Art degree at Central Saint Martins. During this time I learned how important the work of your friends around you was in driving you on and started to organize exhibitions to showcase our work - everywhere from abandoned houses and car parks to small galleries who would accept written proposals. I decided that I wanted more and so whilst working full time jobs I applied for opportunities to experience the artworld I was entering. In 2006 I was awarded an international internship at The Museum of Modern Art and moved to The Bronx for three months. It was there I found my confidence, meeting a variety of artists, curators and gallery owners - attending openings and getting the chance to put on a show of my own in an apartment two floors up from where I was living. When I came back The Arts Council of England awarded me a similar role at The Hayward Gallery. During this time I was also working on a commission - a collaboration with musician KT Tunstall (whom I met by chance in New York!) on art work for her second album "Drastic Fantastic". It was difficult managing two jobs but it resulted in being able to afford to apply for The Royal College of Art MA Painting program. I have just finished two successful years there including a 10 Magazine feature as one of the artists of the future. I am currently in a studio residency at The Florence Trust working on my own art practice, ready to develop my own vision.
