IF I WON I WOULD...
Use the tickets to fly my family out to Antigua to witness my arrival after my record-breaking 4 weeks Atlantic crossing at sea.
MY STORY
I left school at 16 to work in the yachting industry. Within 2 years I had sailed over 30,000 miles including 3 trans-Atlantic crossings. At the age of 18, I had a swimming accident and broke my neck, paralysing me from the shoulders down. 5 years later, I helped set up and became Chairman of the national disabled sailing charity, RYA Sailability, a charity that now helps 20,000 disabled people go sailing each year.
In 2007 I became the first disabled person to sail single-handed around Great Britain. I was voted BBC South Sports Personality of the Year and nominated for the Daily Telegraph Great Britain of the Year and Yachtsman of the Year.
My next Challenge is to sail the Atlantic Ocean single-handed. In December 2009, I will set sail in a 60ft, purpose-built, wheelchair-accessible catamaran on a voyage across the Atlantic Ocean. The 2,700 mile journey will take me up to a month to complete, across some of the most hostile waters in the world. In completing my Challenge, I will become the first quadriplegic to make the journey, unassisted in every aspect of the sailing.
It will be a matter of complex logistics for the shore-based support team and a feat of personal endurance and sailing skills for me.
An official departure with a delivery crew from the UK to the Canary Islands will take place at the Southampton Boat Show in September 2009 with Princess Anne. The boat will set sail from the Canary Islands to the Caribbean in December 2009, arriving January 2010
