IF I WON I WOULD...
Great Britons would help me enormously as I need to fly a great deal; to tournaments, matches, training and competitions. My sport, table tennis,is my passion, but is a minority sport in the UK, for which Olympic funding has been drastically cut, so I must self finance this. To move to the next level I need to train and compete more in Europe and then China.I am currently training full time with a top European club, Wink, in Budapest, but must frequently travel back and forth to England for important matches and tournaments and to Belgium for league matches. I am also entering more World Pro tour ITTF circuit tournaments which, as the name suggests, are all over the world, and require expensive flights. I need this to give me greater high level competition and experience.
I need to accelerate my development by training and competing in China too, but the flights are restrictively too expensive to do this.By winning th support of BA it could mean i could travel to China for intensive training and learn as much as i can from them taking me to the next level
Recently a local table tennis player and businessman, Chris Ogle, who has seen my development from the very early stages, initiated a campaign to help raise awareness of the sport and lack of funding and to raise funds and practical help to enable me have every opportunity to reach the 2012 Olympics and beyond. The campaign can be found at www.willmeon.com.
By receiving the gift of flights it will open new doors and enable me to play more competitions further afield where ever they may be,without worrying about using too much of my budget on the flights. It could well be these tournaments that give me the experience and the edge to achieve my goal, the 2012 Olympics.
MY STORY
My family are ballsport players, my mum played county table tennis,my aunt played tennis for England and my Dad is a trained PE teacher,so from a very early age ball sports were the norm in my family. Initially I played many sports to a reasonable level and made the county hockey team before the table tennis team.I always liked table tennis the best, with the fast reactions and necessity for quick strategic thinking, rather like an active game of chess.
By the time I started secondary school I knew that I wanted to specialise in table tennis and put all my efforts into it.I was training 3 times a week with competitions every weekend. At 13, after a particularly successful national ranking trials,I was selected for the National youth development squad and then for the team, which was my dream come true. At my first Tournament representing England in Wales, I won the group event then the singles, which was totally against the odds.Since then i have been a regular in the England team representing them at Under 13,Under 15 and Under 18 levels with competitions all over the world. Also have been steady ranked player in top 5 for all age groups.
Now everyday consists of around 7-9 hours playing and 1-2 hours of physical training, it's hard, but I love it.
With the help of the 'Will Me On campaign' I now have a team of people working voluntarily to help me. These include a nutritionist and sports psychologist.
My Club, parents and now the'Will Me On campaign' have supported me and got me to Europe, and the BA Great Britons could take me much, much further.
